Money Saving Tip Tuesday!

The advice I have to offer this week may not be applicable to all.

But if you have an online shopping addiction, like myself, it should be helpful.

I've tried this tip in the past, only to eventually let the temptation creep back in. This time I am determined to stick to it.

What am I talking about?

The "unsubscribe" button. You know, the little button at the end of all your e-mail notifications?
I receive way too many e-mails from stores. My inbox can often be found with e-mails detailing the newest J.Crew arrivals or Madewell deals.

Yesterday morning when I woke up, the first thing I did was check my e-mails via my iphone. An e-mail from Loft instantly caught my attention.

"Extra 60% off all sale items!"

I literally jumped out of bed and stumbled sleepily to the laptop on my desk. I typed in the Loft website address, let the familiar adrenaline rush of online shopping swoosh over me and ah ... I was in heaven. I squealed with joy, texted friends and even tweeted about the sale.

The deal was insane. A peplum sweater for $20, a cardigan blazer for $22, earrings for $10! I couldn't get enough. I raced through each page of sale items, adding one thing after another to my shopping cart. After a total of probably two minutes, I had nine new tops lined up for purchase. After allowing a quick re-run through all of the sale items offered, something caught my eye.

Wow. What a beautiful, plain, bright green t-shirt that is ... for only $9.

I clicked "add to cart," before I could even blink. It was 9:40am at this point, the sale was set to end at 10am.

As I began typing in my credit card number, to purchase the now ten items I both didn't need nor have the money for, something clicked. And no, it wasn't the "submit purchase" button.

I didn't need these things. In fact, the only reason I was on this stupid site in the first place was because I had gotten an e-mail notification. Right then and there, I decided to re-introduce myself to the "unsubscribe" button.

I returned to my inbox, where I had roughly twenty different store e-mails waiting for me. One by one I opened each up, scrolled to the bottom, and clicked unsubscribe. I've continued doing it today and I will continue doing - until not one single store is sending me e-mail  notifications.

So my Money Saving Tip for this Tuesday is hit the unsubscribe button. Whether it for Wegmans, your favorite bookstore, or Victoria Secret ... just do it!

Don't let temptation win.
